KAOReads

I'm into some dark shit.

Dead as a Doornail (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood, Book 5) (TV Tie-In)

Dead as a Doornail (TV Tie-In): A Sookie Stackhouse Novel - Charlaine Harris First of all, the woman who illustrates the covers of these books is just awful. I could create a better cover illustration by dunking my feet in paint and doing a tapdance on the book. And as much as I am enjoying this series, I am concerned these dime novels are like McDonald's for my brain.

I Hate People!: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What You Want Out of Your Job

I Hate People!: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What You Want Out of Your Job - Jonathan Littman;Marc Hershon This book really helped me get through some hard times in my professional life. With coping strategies and humorous anecdotes, it was exactly the outlet for my frustrations that I needed so as not to end up bitch-slapping my boss and/or colleagues.

The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't

The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't - Robert I. Sutton I picked this up in search for advice on how to deal with assholes in my professional life. Unfortunately, the only real solution is NOT to deal with assholes in your professional life, and this book convinced me of that fact. The No Asshole Rule empowered me by providing criterea with which to evaluate my situation - was I really surrounded by assholes, or was there something wrong with ME? I am now employed in a largely asshole-free environment, subscribed to Mr. Sutton's blog, and a much, much happier person.

Your Brain at Work: Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, and Working Smarter All Day Long

Your Brain at Work: Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, and Working Smarter All Day Long - David Rock Have you ever evaluated your work performance and asked yourself questions like, "Why haven't I been more productive today?" "Why did I deal with this situation so poorly?" or "Why doesn't my brain work??" Your Brain at Work is truly read-able brain science. It helped me isolate the most problematic of my work behaviors and provided me with suggestions on how to change them.

You Deserve Nothing: A Novel

You Deserve Nothing: A Novel - Alexander Maksik Originally I gave the book 4 stars, but then I found out that it was a true story, and so not only did the guy actually have an affair with a child, he capitalized on the affair by passing it off as "fiction."What an asshole.

Gone Girl: A Novel

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn I got to page 25 or so before quitting and shelving this on my fuck-this-book shelf.

The Marriage Plot: A Novel

The Marriage Plot - Jeffrey Eugenides I did not enjoy this novel one bit.

There Are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing Up in The Other America

There are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing Up in the Other America - Alex Kotlowitz Just watch The Wire.

Almost Transparent Blue

Almost Transparent Blue - Ryū Murakami, Nancy Andrew I feel awful about shelving Ryu Murakami on my "fuck this book" shelf because of how much I generally adore him. I actually don't think it's his fault at all, I think the translation is just really, really bad. But I'm abandoning it.

The Flame Alphabet (Vintage Contemporaries)

The Flame Alphabet - Ben Marcus It's too long, is what it is.I'd agree with most other reviewers who report that it's conceptually cool and well-written and everything. But it could probably be half this length or shorter.

The Vampire of Ropraz

The Vampire of Ropraz - Jacques Chessex, Donald Wilson A vampire novel of a different stripe - one that would make Charlaine Harris throw up and stay awake from nightmares for a month. An examination of a tortured and corrupted mind and of the dripping and bleeding over that occurs from one inhuman act of brutal violence to another.

[sic]: A Memoir

[sic]: A Memoir - Joshua Cody I don't think this book was written for women.Or maybe it wasn't written for the kind of woman that I happen to be, at the moment. It's well-crafted and enthralling and almost beautiful. But there's this raw, I-had-cancer-but-I-still-got-lots-of-grade-A-tail-all-the-time bravado that I couldn't get used to and wasn't that into.

Train Dreams: A Novella

Train Dreams: A Novella - Denis Johnson I decided to review all the books I read, and it's been tough because of how much I've enjoyed the books I've come across since making that decision. At just over 100 small-cut pages, Train Dreams is billed as a novella, but it has everything you could ever want in a novel: shootings, birth, death, love, loss, lumberjacks, witty verbal exchange, flames, apparitions, drinking, hard work, legends.

The Imperfectionists: A Novel (Random House Reader's Circle)

The Imperfectionists - Tom Rachman Beautiful. Each chapter is a stand-alone story devoted to a character connected to/working at a newspaper in Rome, and, at the end of each chapter, there is a piece of the story of the inception/development of the paper over time. The history-pieces are presented in italics, which I didn't like. I find italic sections easy to skim and dismiss.I hated parting with each character at the end of his or her respective chapter, although my pain was mitigated by the fact that they all re-appear as the supporting cast of their colleague's stories. In spite of the brevity of each, the stories are compelling and the characters whole, inspiring genuine moments of "Oh, no, how could she??" and "But what's he going to do now??" and "I knew it! That bastard."

The Pixar Touch (Vintage)

The Pixar Touch - David A. Price For me, this book lacked focus. It was difficult for me to keep track of the many individuals involved in the development of different companies and technologies, and the book goes into too much depth as to the story development of each movie.

Super Sad True Love Story: A Novel

Super Sad True Love Story - Gary Shteyngart A good book that I didn't enjoy at all.
